Sony has decided to throw its hat into the phablet ring with its release of the new Xperia Z Ultra smartphone.

Sony claims that the Xperia Z Ultra is the slimmest phablet out on the market. The Xperia Z Ultra has a 6.4in screen and can also accept sketches or notes written with a standard pencil or metal-tipped pen as well as an optional stylus. Sony hopes their phone will be able to challenge Samsung’s top spot in the phablet sector. Samsung currently controls about 70% of the oversized handset sector.

The new Xperia was unveiled at the Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai with plans to begin sales in China, Indonesia, and Singapore in July and then in Europe by September. No news of when the Xperia Z Ultra will hit the US markets.

The Xperia Z Ultra contains one of Qualcomm’s newest processors. The 6.4in display has 1080p resolution and weighs about 212 grams. The coolest and probably most useless feature about the Xperia Z is that it is waterproof to a depth of 1.5m so people can take pictures and film HD video underwater.

Just think of all the other cool things that a person could do with a waterproof phone. Sony really hit a homerun with the Xperia Z…too bad no one watches baseball anymore.
